Governance

Buckinghamshire College Group is led by a Corporation or Board comprised of governors representing the community, College staff and students. Buckinghamshire College Group is a trading name of Aylesbury College Corporation.

Welcome

I am delighted and honoured to have been selected as Chair of Governors for the Buckinghamshire College Group. I have worked with both Aylesbury College and Amersham & Wycombe College for a number of years and am always very proud to say that I am helping to play part in the development of the quality curriculum and services the colleges deliver.

First impressions count, and soon as you step on campus and walk through the doors of a Buckinghamshire College Group site you know that this is where special things happen. I got that feeling on my first visit to Aylesbury College and have continued to get the sense of professionalism, vitality and indeed fun every time I pass through the turnstiles or front doors of one of the sites, whether it is on a busy enrolment day at the start of term, at exam and assessment time at the end of the year, or even in holiday periods or later in the working day as part of a Corporation meeting.

As in any good team we all have to play our part, a Governor’s role is to help set the vision for the College and support the senior management team in ensuring that you all enjoy an outstanding, rewarding, stimulating and safe learning experience in your time here. I think that we have a great team in Buckinghamshire and that together, students, staff and Governors can help drive the new College Group to even greater success in the future.

I hope that you have a fantastic time whilst being part of the Buckinghamshire College Group team and I look forward to meeting many of you over the next 12 months.

The Carver Model

Some years ago our Corporation took a significant step forward when it adopted the Policy Governance model put forward by John & Mariam Carver (www.carvergovernance.com).

Under this policy we concentrate on shaping the ‘ends’ of the College – the benefits we wish it to develop for our different communities. We also set the parameters or limitations on the ‘means’ managers and staff can use in delivering those ends and, finally, we put high emphasis on codes of conduct, rules for the selection of Corporation Members and their training and development. We set challenging and ambitious targets for standards and quality.

It is this philosophy which has enabled us to concentrate our time on strategic achievements like the Learning Campus, the University Technical College and our federation with Buckinghamshire New University. Our Corporation works as a whole body of equal Members drawn from students, staff, local businesses, local residents, partners, local Government and charities.

We have few Committees and prefer to make corporate policy decisions in the interests of our students and the development of the College. We rely on our staff to have the ability to manage and implement our policies and they report to the whole Corporation on a regular basis on matters such as strategy, finance, quality and growth. As Governors we try to be meticulous in monitoring outcomes and asking the right questions. We focus on measureable impacts on student learning and the community.

We strive to be alert to the views of our staff, the community and most important of all, the student voice. We prioritise the following key features of the Carver Model:

  • Corporate responsibility
  • Equality between Governors
  • Encouragement to staff in their implementation of policies
  • Concentration on high level strategic decisions
